New Get Online sessions / Thank you to our volunteers

Since Get Online was widened out, in late August, to a variety of locations across the city, some 85 completely new learners have attended sessions. These have included new groups run for the first time at Leith and Blackhall libraries which have been very well attended and, as ever, fantastically well supported by our team of volunteers. In fact, in the period since the latter part of August volunteers have provided no less than approx 300 hours of support across all the Get Online groups. Castlebrae High School pupils assist at Get Online sessions

Get Online has, for the first time, set up a partnership with a local High School to involve senior school pupils in supporting learners. The Craigmillar/East Neighbourhood Get Online group were very ably assisted by four students from Castlebrae High accompanied by Castlebrae ICT teacher Barry Ferguson. A very big thank you to them all for attending this and four subsequent sessions through into November. Three Get Online ‘graduates’ recently visited the Scottish Parliament to attend a meeting of the Cross-Party group on Adult Learning. Having taken part in the break away discussions at the meeting, our students also took the opportunity to visit the debating chamber. One of the learners, May Jenkins, commented that it was  “It was a most enjoyable and informative afternoon”.

Get Online will provide another series of groups throughout October including two new venues. MONDAY AFTERNOONS : LEITH LIBRARY TUESDAY AFTERNOONS : EAST NEIGHBOURHOOD CENTRE, CRAIGMILLAR WEDNESDAY AFTERNOONS : BLACKHALL LIBRARY THURSDAY MORNINGS: MORNINGSIDE LIBRARY FRIDAY MORNINGS : CENTRAL LIBRARY All of these are ‘bring any device’ except for the Blackhall group which will be for iPad only “We were shown how to get as much as we could cope with and were taken through it on a step by step basis. Full Get Online groups!!

The current Get Online groups are all fully booked and being attended by more than 40 learners each week. This involves providing help to people with a very wide range of devices, from laptops, to iPads and tablets and also some smart phones! Over the five weekly sessions people work through their own Personal Plan which can cover everything from the basics of how a device works to specific issues like setting up e-mail and Skype and how to effectively search on and use the internet. Get online will be providing several new groups at new venues from mid-August. iPad group, Monday afternoons, 2 – 4, Stockbridge Library, from Monday August 18th (four weekly sessions) – bring along your iPad and learn how to get the most out of your device from simply downloading and using apps, using the iTunes Store, the internet, reading books etc.etc. Contact Stockbridge library staff to book a place. Free Get Online sessions in Craigmillar

Our free sessions on using the internet have had a welcome response in Craigmillar. Local resident Lia Gibson says: “Enjoying the course very much. It is a great opportunity to get help with my laptop but I have also had very welcome assistance with my new iPhone as well. Very relaxed and pleasant atmosphere helps, the staff and volunteers are very patient and I really feel I am slowly making progress. I have already recommended this to friends”.
